Do’s and Don’ts to market small business on Twitter

Marketing-TwitterTwitter is one of the top social media platforms next to Facebook that is utilized by small businesses at the moment. When used smartly, twitter provides immense opportunities for brands to reach their potential customers. The challenge is to convey your message under 140 characters to the users who are constantly flooded with information and have a short attention span. Twitter has about a billion users and with proper guidelines, small businesses can use it as an effective tool to establish a powerful presence on social media.

Here are some essential do’s and don’ts that beginners must go through if you’re trying to utilize this platform for marketing purposes:

Do’s

  • Use a recognizable and appropriate image for your profile. It could be your brand’s logo or anything that creates brand awareness. The image size recommended by twitter is 400 x 400 pixels.
  • Use a header image. This feature is a more recent addition to twitter and can be a powerful tool to convey your message. Ignoring this could leave the impression that you haven’t been involved with twitter for a while. The image size recommended for the header is 1500 x 500 pixels.
  • Do use hashtags in your tweets, they are used to identify a common topic. When you click on a hashtag, you are shown a list of tweets that contain that hashtag. Though, make sure that you separate URLs from these hashtags.
  • Your twitter account should be consistent with all the other online presence that your brand has. Choose your account name and image accordingly. Color coordinate across your marketing materials for brand consistency.
  • Tell a story to present your brand to the Twitter community.
  • Fill out the profile details completely. Share your location details, website, and bio so that it becomes easier for people to find you, and have a better understanding of who you are and what you offer.
  • Be selective about the people you follow, don’t just aggressively start following. You can follow your clients, partners, competitors, your professional network and other people that you find are important for your business to follow.
  • Write messages that are somewhere between what your target audience wants to hear and the stuff you want to convey to promote your brand.
  • Use your 140 characters wisely. Feel free to shorten sentences, remove filler words or even use some popular SMS characters.
  • Create a tweet around your website link to drive traffic towards your blog. You can shorten your web address to just 23 characters using the Twitter URL shortener.
  • The time of posting a tweet also affects people’s engagement. According to a study, the best time to tweet during weekdays is between 1 p.m. and 3.p.m.
  • Retweet content that is beneficial to your followers, it will keep you involved and expand your reach.
  • Add Twitter’s follow button to your website. Twitter also allows you to share your tweet timeline, but you need to make sure you share the right tweets on your blog or website.
  • Add photographs and videos to make your tweets look more interactive.
  • Enlist your followers into groups so that you can organize information coming from different groups. These lists can be made private or public.
  • Use advanced search to find potential customers near your location.
  • Measure your brand’s twitter performance using twitter analytics.

Don’ts

  • Don’t use too many hashtags, it might make you lose followers.
  • Don’t follow too many accounts just for the sake of following. Try to keep the follower/ following ratio even.
  • Don’t retweet every time someone mentions your account, you don’t want your followers’ feed to be flooded with other fans’ tweets.
  • Don’t use hard sell tactics, tell people how you can benefit them rather than aggressively selling your products and services.
  • Don’t try to summarize your blog post in one tweet, use twitter to grab attention and encourage your audience to read more.
